Dog Behavior Problems
Do you think that you have a dog with behavior problems? Dog Behavior problems can cover a large range of various things. Some dog owners don't even recognize when they have a dog behavior problem. As humans we see a problem with our pets as something that they may be doing that annoy us. But what about the things that are o.k. with us but annoy others, should this be viewed as a behavior problem? How about the things that they do that we have a take it or leave it type attitude towards although we prefer that they didn't do but can live with. Our dogs and cats alike are our families, and we love them as such. Let me ask this. If you had 2-3 children and even though they aren't in no way being compared to your pet dog, if one of them started to behave in a certain way, an annoying way, most of us wouldn't allow it not for one second before putting the brakes on it. Now why would you allow a dog with dog behavior problems to dominate you, when the child couldn't?
Notice that I used the word DOMINATE. I used this word purposely to demonstrate a point. To dominate is to take charge of or to have control over someone as the superior one. You are dominant over your children, or at least thats the way that it's suppose to be. Domination is not a bad thing, when it is appropriate. If your children were dominant over you, that would not be appropriate, and neither is a dog with dog behavior problems. A dog with these type of problems is actually in most cases dominating his/her owner, or is getting their way because YOU, the owner have yet to establish dominion between you and your dog in your home. When this type of communication fails to be established over and over again when certain issues occur in the home, bad dog behavior problems is inevitable and will only escalate into something generally not wanted as a pet owner, an out of control dog with poor dog behavior problems.
Dominance, for those who aren't familiar with the term when concerning an animal, in this case a dog is very, very important to be established in order to start the process of changing the pattern of dog behavior problems. It's used as a submission strategy. Before you can get a dog into a training state of mind in order to train him/her the dog has to become submissive to you. Being submissive simply means that you've gotten all of the anxiety and tension in the dog out and the dog is relaxed and his/her attention is focused totally on you. This state of mind is neccessary for training and changing dog behavior problems. A dog either knows that you are in control or are the Alpha or he/she will be, if your dominance over him/her is not established. But what does this have to do with the dog's behavior problem you might ask? Simply put, everything in and around your home is basically viewed as your dog's property to protect. He/she can feel challenged even by you at times when you try and correct them through channels other than through establishing dominance.
Fortunately bad dog behavior problems can be corrected over time, considering consistent reinforcement behavior rehab type practices become a daily part of retraining the dog. Initially when a new dog is introduced to his/her new home, It is vitally important to establish a sense of dominancy anytime during either a witness, on your part of bad or destructive behavior ot he dog, or perhaps a bettert time is during training sessions with the dog. Dog behavior problems, when let grow for years can be very hard to correct and although possible, will require a strict daily routine of a dog behavior reinforcing sessions to correct. Needless to say the longer a dog behavior problem is left unattended to the harder it generally will be to correct.
